Spider and Thread Veins

You spot them in summer, as fine red and blue webs across the thighs, or as tiny red lines around the nose in the mirror. Legs respond to injection and faces to laser, and matching the technique to the site is what gives such clear, lasting results at Wimpole Street.

What it is and why it happens

Thread veins are tiny blood vessels that have become permanently dilated and visible through the skin. On the legs they spread in red and blue webs across the thighs and behind the knees. On the face they appear as fine red lines around the nose and across the cheeks.

They are usually harmless. They increase with age, pregnancy, hormonal change, prolonged standing and sun exposure, and they run strongly in families.

The critical distinction is site, because legs and faces need completely different treatment. Leg vessels sit deeper and respond to injection. Facial vessels are shallow and respond to laser. Matching the technique to the site is what makes the difference, and it is where people see their best results.

The other thing worth checking is what is underneath. Sometimes deeper veins drive the ones on the surface, so Regents Park Aesthetics checks for this at the assessment and, where it is needed, arranges a vascular scan first, so the course you start is one that lasts.

Leg thread veins

The most common presentation, worsened by pregnancy, standing occupations and hormonal change. Microsclerotherapy is the technique with the longest track record and remains the most reliable for legs. Available at the Wimpole Street clinic, a short walk from Bond Street station.

Facial thread veins

Facial thread veins

Shallow vessels that laser clears quickly. Often associated with rosacea, sun damage or long-term steroid cream use. Treated with laser rather than injection.

Where thread veins sit within a background of persistent flushing, the vessels and the underlying rosacea both need addressing. Treating both together keeps the skin clear for longer.

Here the surface veins may be driven by the deeper ones, so your clinician arranges a vascular assessment first and plans cosmetic treatment around the result.

How we assess and treat

Assessment at Regents Park Aesthetics starts with the site, because that determines the technique, and then with what might be underneath.

For legs, your clinician asks a few questions about how your legs feel through the day, to see whether the deeper veins are raising pressure in the surface ones. That decides whether a course starts straight away or after a scan.

Where a scan is the right first step, your clinician refers you for a duplex ultrasound, so every session you book afterwards builds a result that holds.

For faces, we look at whether the vessels sit within a background of rosacea, which changes the plan. Calming the flushing alongside clearing the vessels gives a result that lasts.

Which treatment for your type of thread vein?

As a guide, this is how we typically match each type to a treatment. Your own plan is always confirmed at consultation, and where a specialist doctor would serve you best, your clinician points you to the right one.

Treatments that address it

Microsclerotherapy A fine needle injects a solution into the vein, closing it so the body absorbs it over the following weeks. The longest track record of any thread vein treatment and the most relia Rosacea Management Where thread veins sit within rosacea, treating the flushing as well as the vessels keeps them clear. Can you treat it at home?

A permanently dilated vessel is a job for the clinic, since creams cannot retract it, so home care is all about prevention and comfort.

Compression hosiery genuinely reduces the pressure that drives new leg veins, and it is worth it for anyone who stands for a living. Elevating the legs at the end of the day does the same thing less effectively. Regular walking supports the calf muscle pump that returns blood upward.

For faces, sun protection matters, since ultraviolet damages vessel walls and drives new ones. Identifying and avoiding flushing triggers matters more if you have rosacea, which frequently underlies facial thread veins.

Keep heat gentle: very hot baths, saunas and steam rooms all dilate vessels and, over time, contribute to permanent dilation.

Green-tinted colour-correcting makeup neutralises redness effectively and is the best cosmetic option while you decide about treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Permanent dilation of tiny surface vessels. Age, pregnancy, hormonal change, prolonged standing, sun exposure and genetics all contribute. On the face they are frequently associated with rosacea or sun damage.

They are usually harmless. Your clinician checks at the assessment whether deeper veins are involved, and arranges a scan first where they are.

Microsclerotherapy: a fine needle injects a solution that closes the vein for the body to absorb. Two to four sessions six weeks apart, available at our Wimpole Street clinic from £280.

With laser rather than injection, because facial skin is thin and the vessels shallow.

Treated veins darken for the first two to three weeks before they fade, which is completely expected and part of the process.

After leg treatment, yes, for around a week. They keep the treated vein walls in contact so they seal properly, which gives the best result.

Treated veins stay closed. The tendency to form new ones remains, so most patients have occasional maintenance over the years rather than a permanent end point.

Legs: a fine needle and brief stinging. Face: a light snapping sensation. Neither requires anaesthetic.

A permanently dilated vessel sits beyond the reach of creams, which is why microsclerotherapy and laser are the treatments that clear it.

Legs from £280 initial and £200 per follow-up. Facial veins from £160 half face. Consultation is free.
