Most people assume a double chin is about weight, which is why it can linger even after weight loss, and why the right diagnosis makes such a difference.
Four things create submental fullness and they occur in different combinations. Submental fat is a discrete pad beneath the chin that is stubbornly resistant to diet and exercise, and in many people it is genetic and present at a perfectly normal body weight. Skin laxity produces the same silhouette without any excess fat, particularly after weight loss. A weak or separated platysma, the sheet of muscle across the front of the neck, loses the definition that once held the jaw edge. And a recessed chin or small jaw creates the appearance of fullness without either fat or laxity being the issue.
Pinch beneath your chin. If you can grasp a distinct pad, there is fat. If the skin comes away thin and loose with little substance, it is laxity. Knowing which you have is what makes the result.
Regents Park Aesthetics assesses which of the four is driving yours. Most of the device options for this sit at our Wimpole Street clinic, in the Harley Street medical district.
